Windows 2003 Tips & Tricks

Perhatian : sebelum merubah registry , backup terlebih dahulu agar terhindar dari hal-hal yang tidak di inginkan.


  • Administrative Tools Icon On Desktop

  • The administrative Tools folder is in fact a sub-folder of the Documents and 'Settings\AllUsers\Start Menu\Programs' folder, but dragging it or moving it around your computer might cause it to stop functioning. To add the Administrative Tools icon to the desktop, follow these steps:

    1. Click on the Start button and select Run
    2. Type in 'regedit' and press OK
    3. Look for this string:
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace
    4. In the right pane, right-click and select 'New->Key'
    5. Name the key '{D20EA4E1-3957-11d2-A40B-0C5020524153}'
    6. Close the Registry editor

    There is no need to reboot your computer. Just wait a few seconds and the icon will appear.

  • Customize The Command Prompt

  • To configure the Command Prompt in Windows Server 2003, do the following:

    1. Open Command Prompt
    2. Click on the upper left corner of the window and click 'Properties' then 'Options'
    3. In 'Command History' type 999 in buffer size (this enables scrolling through the Command Prompt window)
    4. Type 5 in 'Number Of Buffers' (this increases the number of lines in the window to 5000)
    5. In 'Edit Options' select the 'Quick Edit Mode' and 'Insert Mode' checkboxes
    6. Click on the 'Layout' tab and type in 2500 for the height in the 'Screen Buffer Size'
    7. In the 'Apply Properties' dialog box click 'Save Properties For Future Windows With Same Title'.

  • Delete Files Immediately

  • You can delete files immediately without having them move to the Recycle Bin first. Simply follow these steps:

    1. Click on the Start button and select Run
    2. Type in 'gpedit.msc' and click OK
    3. In Group Policy select 'User Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows Components->Windows Explorer
    4. Double-click on the 'Do not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin' setting
    5. Select the Enabled button and click OK
    6. Exit the Group Policy.

  • Disable Automatic Updates

  • To turn off the Automatic Update feature in Windows Server 2003 do the following:

    1. Click on the Start button and select 'Settings' then 'Control Panel'
    2. Double-click on the 'System' icon and select the 'Automatic Updates' tab
    3. Unselect the 'Keep My Computer Up To Date' checkbox.

  • Disable Error Reporting

  • One of the new features of Windows XP and in Windows Server 2003 is the error reporting feature that offers to send diagnostic information to Microsoft whenever an application or part of the system crashes. There are a number of reasons why you may want to reduce or turn this feature off, particularly if your computer is not connected to the Internet. You can choose to disable the reporting completely, or you can limit it to just the operating system errors or, just errors from certain programs of your choosing. To turn off the Error Reporting feature in Windows Server 2003 do the following:

    1. Click on the Start button and select 'Settings' then 'Control Panel'
    2. Double-click on the 'System' icon and select the 'Advanced' tab
    3. Click on the Error Reporting button
    4. Click on the 'Disable Error Reporting' box and select 'But Notify Me When Critical Errors Occur'.

  • Disable Shutdown Event Tracker

  • Shutdown Event Tracker provides a way for IT professionals to consistently track why users restart or shut down their computers. It does not document why users choose other options, such as Log off and Hibernate. It gathers the reasons users give for restarts and shutdowns to help create a comprehensive picture of an organization's system environment. To disable Shutdown Event Tracker perform the following steps:

    1. Open Group Policy, then load the group policy you want to apply the change to
    2. Expand 'Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->System'
    3. Double-click 'Display Shutdown Event Tracker'
    4. Select 'Disabled'
    5. Select the 'Never' option then click OK.

  • Display Hidden Drivers

  • There are times when you'll need to manually remove old, obsolete, hidden (phantom) drivers from your system. Looking in Device Manager does not show all the installed drivers, just the ones that are configurable by the GUI. To force your system to display these old and hidden drivers, follow these steps:

    1. Go to Control Panel and double click on 'System'
    2. Go to the 'Advanced' tab and click 'Environment Variables'
    3. In the 'System Variables' section click on the 'New' button
    4. In the 'New System Variable' dialog box enter devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices
    5. Give it a Variable Value of 1
    6. Click OK
    7. In the 'System Properties' window click OK
    8. Log off the computer then log back on
    9. Open 'Device Manager'
    10. From the View menu click 'Show Hidden Devices'.

  • Enable CD Burning

  • Windows Server 2003 has the CD burning drivers disabled by default. The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service required by this peripheral device is disabled, so to make it work you will need to enable it. Simply follow these steps:

    1. Go to the Services applet in Administrative Tools
    2. Find the IMAPI CD-burning COM service
    3. Right-click on it and select 'Properties'
    4. select 'Automatic' in the 'Startup Type' box.
    5. Click 'Apply'
    6. Right-click the IMAPI CD-burning COM service and select 'Start'
    7. Click OK

    Note: With some third-party software, you may be able to burn CDs without starting the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service.

  • Enable Graphic Acceleration

  • Windows Server 2003 Graphics Acceleration is disabled by default, which disables DirectX functionality. This is to enhance server stability and is not needed in standard server scenarios. To enable DirectX, Direct3D and DirectDraw, follow these steps:

    1. Right-click on the desktop and select 'Settings->Advanced->Troubleshooting'
    2. Set the 'Hardware Acceleration' bar to full
    3. Click OK
    4. Click on the Start button and select Run
    5. Type in 'dxdiag' and click OK
    6. Click on the Display tab
    7. Click on the 'Enable' button for DirectDraw and Direct3D.

  • Enable Sound In Enterprise Edition

  • Windows Server 2003 Standard has the sound drivers enabled by default, but the Enterprise edition is disabled. To enable the sound drivers in the Enterprise edition, follow these steps:

    1. Go to the Services applet in Administrative Tools
    2. Find the 'Windows Audio' service and right click on it then select 'Properties'
    3. Select 'Automatic' in the 'Startup Type' box
    4. Click 'Apply' then 'Start' then OK
    5. Reboot your computer to enable the sound.

  • Enable Theme Support

  • Windows Server 2003 has the Theme support disabled by default. To enable it, follow these steps:

    1. Go to the Services applet in Administrative Tools
    2. Find the 'Themes' service and right-click on it then select 'Properties'
    3. Select 'Automatic' in the 'Startup' type box
    4. Click 'Apply'
    5. Right-click on the 'Themes' service and select 'Start'
    6. Click OK.

  • Remove The Recycle Bin From The Desktop
  • To delete the Recycle Bin icon from the Windows 2003 desktop follow these steps:

    1. Click on the Start button and select Run
    2. Type in 'regedit' and press OK
    3. Look for this key:
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace
    4. Under the 'NameSpace' key, delete the following key:
    {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
    5. Close the Registry editor and the Recycle Bin icon
    will disappear from the desktop.

    In order to restore the Recycle Bin icon to the desktop just re-create the key you deleted above.

mas, saya mau tanya di komputer saya muncul pesan ini c:\windows\microsoft office update for Windows XP.sys failed (The filename, directory name. Or volume lable syntax incorrect) saya mohon batuanya :D
